Cat with spinal cord injury not defecating

Hello,

I have a 10 yr old cat that has a spinal cord injury. He has been this way for a little over 2 years.

He has incontinence, so I help him urinate by squeezing his bladder.

He also has no control over his anal muscles, so his body pretty much releases stool whenever it wants to.

I usually take him in to get an enema every 6 months or so, which is around when he becomes stopped up.

Recently, his stool size has been getting smaller, even though I took him to get an enema about a month ago.

I try to give him as much moisture as possible, and try to stimulate him so he will have bowel movements.

I was wondering if giving him enemas at home would be possible (those at a vet are very expensive, and causes him stress), but was told by the vet that will be difficult, and possibly even dangerous for my cat.

If anyone can provide me with any information on how to get him to defecate more, it will be greatly appreciated. He is able to jump up/down on beds and run around seemingly without pain. He currently takes cisapride and lactulose.

Thank you for reading this post.
