My gf had a beautiful, friendly bengal wander into her basement about 10 days ago. She took it in and fed it for about a week. We wound up taking it to the vet to have it scanned for a microchip. Turns out he has one. The vet said they will have the chip company contact the owners. That was about 3 days ago now and we have not heard any word from the owners or the chip company. I would like to keep the cat since he is a sweetheart and I couldn't bring myself to dump him at a shelter.
My question is, does anyone know the laws regarding this type of situation? I'm located in Pennsylvania if it matters. I'm beginning to think he was just dumped since the owner has not reached out yet. My gf thinks the owner passed away and the cat somehow got out which is why we cant get in contact with them. Is there a time frame in which I would become owner of the cat if he is not claimed? What do you guys think?
Tldr; Found chipped cat and owner has not contacted me yet. Can i legally keep him?
