We have a sort of odd problem. Our cat, we think, got it in her head years ago when she was still young that couches = litter box substitute.
Now we tried to tackle how to fix this for a while. We've tried gross sprays, and she never cares about that. We've tried "waterproof" couch covers; she's a maine coon and pees a lot. Those things aren't waterproof. We even put a litter box right next to the couch, and she never used it. And I have definitely made sure there are places for her to lie and spread her sent in the living room.
The only thing that we found that works is aluminum foil on all the couches. But that means spending years and years with aluminum foil on all your couches. And it's always awkward when people drop over and we never sit in the living room because everything is covered in aluminum foil. And if we take it off and walk away, boom, she's on the couch.
We're in a position though where somebody just gave us brand new amazing couches for free. We really don't want to do this anymore. We want to have couches we can be proud of that don't smell weird and don't have aluminum foil all over them.
Should we get automatic spray bottles to deter her? They seem to have a really short range and there is a couch and two recliners we're trying to keep her off of. Also if anybody knows of any couch covers that are actually waterproof that would be so amazing.
(I would also like to point out that there's nothing medically wrong with her -- she goes to the vet all the time.)
