Help needed from experienced mice owners!!

Hey everyone!

I am a first grade teacher and my kiddos have been begging me for a class pet. It’s something I’ve been interested in for awhile. My kids had to earn the pet and well they finally have. We took a vote today and the winner was a pet mouse.

I have owned hamsters and guinea pigs in the past but never a mouse so I have a few questions before I go and buy one. Before bringing one in the classroom we will be learning all about the habitat and care for our little pet.

If you can help with any of these questions I would greatly appreciate it

  1. Can I have just one mouse? After doing research a lot of websites suggested having two females. Is this necessary or can we have one?

  2. What kinds of fruits and veggies are good for them and how often can they have these treats?

  3. Our classrooms have motion sensors that set off an alarm after the school has been closed and locked up for the day. I’m concerned about this because I know mice are active at night. But if the sensor goes off I supposedly can get in trouble because police and the works will show up thinking someone broke in. So my question is: can I put a light blanket, sheet, etc over the top of the cage? I don’t wanna suffocate the little one though so I need this clarified or we will have to change pets. I plan on getting a wire cage not a glass one.

  4. Is a wire cage okay for mice? Like the ones with a solid bottom.

  5. Also, probably stupid and I believe I know the answer, will it be okay left over the weekend at school? I’m assuming no but figured I would ask. Obviously with clean water and food.

  6. Will a mouse run on a wheel in the cage? And will it use one of those mobile ball things? (Sorry blanking on the name)

If you have any other tips I would totally appreciate it!

Thanks everyone! Sorry for any typos or formatting I am on my mobile device!
