How much to budget for cat food? Please Help!

So, I'm looking to adopt a cat, but before I do I want to make sure that I can take care of it the best that I can - and that the best I can do won't harm it. I'm a college student trying to budget how much I can spend on cat food. I've read a couple of things that discuss the importance of finding a cat food that is grain free and using a mixture of dry and wet food...I know people say that owning cats is less expensive than dogs, but I'm starting to get the sense that making sure that cats have quality food negates that statement...

Is finding a good cat food the end-all-be-all for owning a cat or am I overthinking it? I'm hoping to spend ~$20 on a 40lb bag, but again I can't choose a brand... :(
