Is my cat addicted to his automatic feeder? Can I change/unteach/alter this behavior? Will he stop sitting by the feeder for long periods throughout the day?

We got our cat an automatic feeder to feed him at 1am and 7am, 1pm and 7pm, because feeding him only twice a day was making him batshit insane and keeping us up at insane hours of the morning.

Over the past couple of months, our cat has taken to sitting in front of the feeder for 1-2 hours before it goes off. This happens at least twice a day.

We assume this happens at the 1pm/am slots but we’re at work so we can’t see it.

We believe this began occurring most visibly after we moved his feed times up an hour.

Can we reverse this behavior? Will he ever stop sitting in front of the automatic feeder for 4-8h a day?
