Is it OK to leave a dog in his crate at night AND during work?

My wife and I just go our first dog. He's mostly ok in the crate. When we're around he's totally fine being closed in jt, and will go in on his own all the time. When we left him in his crate (in the living room) while we went to bed the first time he barked like crazy. The next day we did a bit of work to adjust him to us not being around him constantly and he just cried for a bit but was fine the whole night.

Today we decided to leave him alone for a bit while we left the house. We thought leaving him in the crate during the day, on top of being in the crate during the whole night, was too much. So we left him out of the crate and immediately checked on our camera to see what he was up to. He immediately jumped on to our table (something he's never shown the vaguest interest in doing while we're around) and ate a grape we left in a bowl, which can be potentially hugely toxic (I'm writing this from the emergency vet, he threw it up and is doing fine).

We heard from another owner that they left their dog in the crate at night, take him for a walk in the morning, put him back in for the work day, take him for another walk when they get home and leave him out until bed again at night. Is this OK. Our dog isn't the highest energy but he certainly isn't lazy. Maybe I'm a worrier but I feel bad leaving him locked up all night, and during the work day, and during any other times we might leave for a bit. Any advice would be great.
