I’ve been planning on hopefully getting a pet this summer but my parents seem to think it’s a bad idea.

(On mobile sorry if there’s weird formatting)

A little context: I’m a 22 y/o student moving into an apartment this summer. I’m a huge animal lover and I’ve always felt way happier around animals. I’ve suffered with depression and anxiety throughout university and the one thing I have longed for the most is to have my own fur baby to love. I’ve told my parents I’m thinking about adopting a cat or some rats when I move into my new place (I have experience with both animals). They basically told me not to as it’s expensive and a huge commitment. I’m a bit offended as they know how sensible I am, I know an animal is for life and you become fully responsible for their health, safety and well-being, and they can be expensive too, I’ve done a massive amount of research on both options and I think I’m ready, their reactions have just taken me aback a little bit.

Just wondering if anyone in this sub has had any similar situations where you’ve been told it’s a bad idea but gone ahead with it anyway? What have your experiences been and were you right to be warned? Or did it work out for the better? Any insight is appreciated :)

TLDR; want to get a pet, parents disapprove even though I don’t live with them, I’m extremely sensible and will always put an animal before myself if it is in my care. Advice?
