We rescued a dog almost 4 years ago. Hes a german shepherd/rottie mix. When the rescue got him he had been starved, shot in the leg, and all his nails had grown into the pads on his feet. They fixed his nails. Got him nourished properly and put plates in his leg so they didnt have to amputate it. Its one of his rear legs.
He was trained as a diabetic service dog but wasnt able to do his job because he wanted to eat my moms cat. Turns out his training allows him to be an amazing service dog for me because he picks up on my anxiety.
I took over care with him and I already had an emotional support dog but that one isnt a service dog. The emotional support dog is a pitty chow mix who is extremely attached to my kids.
So I moved into my own house and took both dogs with me. My rottie mix had food aggression and you couldnt touch his feet without him growling or being mean about it.
Today (almost 4 years later) he sleeps on the floor by the end of my bed. I can play with his feet and stick my fingers in between his toes. He eats in the same room as our other dogs. We ended up getting a puppy.
I'm sick today and he keeps the other dogs from surrounding me when I'm trying to do stuff and he helps keep a distance between me and other people when I dont feel well and when I'm anxious.
Hes still got a ways to go before I will feel comfortable taking him to grocery stores and what not but ive been taking him on small trips now to my sons school. He helps keep a barrier between me and other people and he alerts me when my anxiety starts to rise. He also doesnt chase small animals when he seems them anymore.
I am so proud of how far hes come. Hes the perfect dog for me and we both need each other. I am blessed to have him. Hes like a cpmpletely different dog than the one we got at first.
