I am a bit concerned. We had our first cat since it was a baby and we have taken good care of it. It is nearly 5 now and recently, we got a new cat.
Initially, we got the cat as a playmate for him because sometimes he seemed lonely. The cat we got him is 2 years younger, female, and super friendly and loving. We have seen how aggresive and defensive our cat can be around other cats so we were happy to see them getting along (or so we thought).
They will occasionally cuddle but if my elder cat gets annoyed, he will let the other cat know who backs down immediately. The fact that my elder cat is still seen as the top dog in our house seems to reassure him. But lately he seems...idk, sad? Jealous? He has been sleeping a lot more lately. When the new cat is not around, he will actively seek us out for love and attention which is rare for him as he is a pretty aloof cat. When the new cat is around and showering us with affection, he just watches from a distance with a sad look on his face.
We are worried. We make sure he is equally if not MORE loved and still treat him super special. But we are thinking he might be getting depressed and if giving the cat away to another family will make him feel better, we may consider that. What do you guys think? What should I do? Any advice is appreciated.
