Letting cats outside for the first time

Hey all! So we have two cats, brother and sister around 8/9 months old, and are thinking about letting them outside for the first time this evening - and it's safe to say we're terrified! We were originally going to keep them as indoor cats, but having seen a fair few other cats in the area wandering around it seems ok to let them loose for brief periods. They're more and more curious about the outside world every day, and whilst we haven't got a catdoor or anything to let them in and out at random, we're usually around the flat to give them access outdoors if they want it. I just don't want them to become entirely outdoor cats, so would you say it's better to keep them indoors all the time - or can they be allowed out every now and then and still be perfectly happy? Just kind of worried they'll prefer it outside and never come back aha...

Going to slowly introduce them to the outdoors around dinner time this evening so that they want to head back inside when they get hungry, but are there any other things we should absolutely do to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible? My biggest fear is that we have some train tracks about 300 yards back from our flat, and while they're fenced off pretty well I always worry they'll wander onto them if left unsupervised.

We have a little enclosed garden that's fenced all round, so they won't get very far I don't think should they decide to flee, but that's not likely right? Any tips you can give would be massively appreciated!
