Looking to adopt cat, advice and age question.

I'm looking to adopt and I've been visiting all my local shelters.

I am pregnant and have a 2 year old and a 7 year old. I've owned cats my entire life and we are ready to add one to our family.

I've met 3 local I really love and do great with kids. The one I absolutely am head over heals for is a female tuxedo who is all love and very cuddly. She loves attention and has some sort of training when I was playing with her.

I thought she seemed a bit skinny and her fur is thin in some areas but thought it was maybe diet which I can fix.

The vet estimated she was born in 2001, owner of organization said she seems to have had one litter and believes she's closer to 2-5 years old.

The cat is very playful and didn't come off as older to me but maybe the weight and fur indicate her age.

Not that I would be 100% against an elderly cat but I worry about heartache in a couple years and being a frail kitty around young kids.

Is there a way to age her? How often are vets incorrect? The owner said they will just insert a date sometimes.

Next cat is a 9 month old Tom, he has been there since he was born. He is very sweet and playful but plays rough and needs some training. He isn't a fan of being held and was very active, followed me all over the building.

I have always had cats that were 2-5 when adopted and I would love advice on a cat his age.

Very sweet and I think he was super excited we were playing just a bit bitey which worries me with little ones.

Thank you for any advice! I am bringing kids to meet them tomorrow and I have a few more I'm going to ask about meeting.
