Moving soon, adding a cat

Okay so I'll try to keep this succinct because there are some different variables at play and I'm curious to know what you guys think as there is plenty of time to prepare.

My gf and I will be getting an apartment together in a few months. It's hard to tell what size as of yet, but most likely a two bedroom. She has never had pets growing up and fell in love with my cat. She wants to adopt a kitten after we move.

I (currently in grad school) have been living in New England for the past few years while my 5 year old cat has been living at my mom's in NY. Because of various circumstances, I haven't been able to move her out with me as much as I have wanted to the past few years. I've had her since she was a kitten and she is used to living with other cats and dogs. She currently lives with 4 other cats (close in age) and a medium size dog, and used to go back and forth between my house and my ex's house of 2 cats and 2 small dogs. She has always gotten along fairly well, but she can be 'territorial' around me and makes it clear that she values having her own space (my bedroom at home). My only concern is that only one cat has ever been introduced after her. They get along fairly well with only some drama here and there, but the house was large enough for them not be forced to be on top of each other.

So, I'm wondering if there is a preferred way of pulling some of these pieces together. I think the most obvious and best way would be moving, give my cat time to settle in, and then introduce the new cat after a little bit of time. However, I am curious as to what you guys think. I don't want my cat to be suddenly alone for most of the day, but I also feel as though we need to wait x amount of time before adopting the other. What is a good amount of time?
