Hi so let me start off by saying I have two dogs named Olive and Lola. Lola originally was my brothers dog that he got from his drug dealer in New Jersey many years ago so he has no proof on paper that Lola is legally his dog or any vet bills that say he has paid for her. Olive is a dog that my mother bought for me but I am the only one who takes care of her. I feed both Olive and Lola everyday and I buy their food, take them on walks, pay for their vet bills(I’ve saved them) and I also shower them and have bought other things for them such as toys, beds and even new harnesses which were much needed. The house that I currently live in with these dogs is roach infested and dirty. There is dog feces in many places around the outside of the house/we have a fence so the dogs sometimes just get left outside for periods of time and use the bathroom there and their poop won’t be picked up for however many weeks unless I am the one to do it. Nobody else in the house which includes my brother, my mom & her boyfriend changes their water on a daily basis. I and my significant other have come home to the dogs water bowls having dirt inside or even flower petals and have even found an orange peel in there. My bother and mother also have a bad habit of leaving trash cans open so the dogs have gotten in them before and ate leftover scraps. So what I’m trying to say is that without my help the dogs are very neglected and won’t even get taken on walks/have their water changed which is fuckin ridiculous. My significant other and I live in Virginia but are thinking about moving to dc with the dogs. I can for sure take Olive no problem but I’m not sure if my brother will call the police on me for taking Lola even though he does nothing at all to take care of her and has no proof. We plan on just moving out secretly and making the arrangements in private and then leaving with the pets at night once everything is settled in because I know they would have a problem with me taking the dogs all of a sudden/try to stop me. I would be willing to go to court for this and dispute that I am the primary care taker and have the money, time and energy to take care of them with picture evidence of neglect and filthy living conditions. So my question is, does anyone know about the pet custody laws in Virginia/DC /does my plan sound feasible?
