We have a Turkish Kangal puppy, he’s only 5 months old. We got him back in November from a breeder, and it’s our first dog. The breeder brought the dog to us from out of state so we never saw the parents or the rest of the litter. That should have been a red flag for us, but we were new at this and just excited to get a puppy. Everything was fine at first, he took to us immediately except for my sister. He didn’t really have any possession problems, we could touch his food while he eats, play with his ears, tug his tail, everything you’re supposed to do. The only thing he was possessive about were the butcher bones we would give him. If you gave him one and approached him within the first ~5 minutes he would growl and bark at you. After the 5 minutes he was back to normal, you could take the bone, whatever. One day my mom gave him a bone and my sister unknowingly walked within his vicinity and he attacked her and broke skin. I believe this was Christmas Eve. We contacted the breeder to ask him what was going on. He told us he would give bones to the puppies but they would have to fight each other for them, hence the dogs behavior. We stopped giving him the bones after this. Ever since then he’s been very unpredictable with my sister. Sometimes he loves her, jumps all over her, then all of a sudden it’s like he forgets who she is and he attacks her again. It’s gotten to the point that my sister has to lock herself away in her room and can’t come out until she knows we’re holding onto the dog. The dog is also growing his adult teeth now, and if you don’t know anything about Turkish Kangals, they have 3 times the bite force of a pit bull. So it’s a bit of a dangerous situation for my sister, who understandably isn’t a fan of the dog. As far as other people go, the dog is scared of everyone. We can’t have friends or family over, the dog tries to attack everyone who isn’t me or my parents. Even at the pet store he’ll lunge at strangers, he’s a complete liability. We took him to a behavioralist, who said he might be trainable, but most likely not. Most likely the breeder inbred the dogs too much, resulting in a bad litter. We asked the breeder if there were any other aggressive dogs in the litter, he said no but we’re not sure if we believe him. In January my sister was at the hospital for a few weeks, she is having a rough year and has been very depressed, her mental state is not great and the dog isn’t helping. When she got back, the dog was worse than before and she can’t handle it anymore. The dog needs to go. We got in touch with the president of the Kangal rescue association. She informed us that the breeder isn’t a registered Kangal breeder, and the registration papers we received were fake. We told her our story, she agreed something was very wrong with the dog and he had to be removed ASAP. Because the dog has an aggressive behavorial record, she told us the rescue group wouldn’t be able to take him. We tried contacting some other people who wanted him but that fell through as well. We finally asked the breeder to come back and take him. He arrived an hour ago and the dog immediately tried to attack him. The breeder said he couldn’t take him back like this and left. My mom is extremely distressed, at this point our only option is to take him to a shelter and have him put down. We love the dog dearly and we’re heartbroken. Sorry this post was so long, I just want to make sure we explore every option possible to have this dog rehomed before we make this terrible decision. Thank you.
