New Cat Doesn't Like Resident Cat

Well, I cracked and got the poor sweet kitty from Petco. She doesn't like my cat much though. He was curious of her, she hissed at him, he hissed back and then she hid under the dresser and he tried to chase after her so I removed him from the room so she could get used to things for a bit. I didn't mean to introduce them that way, he was hiding somewhere in the room and just sorta popped out and surprised us both.

What's the best way to acclimate two young cats? One is a neutered male, about 8 months old and one is a spayed female, about 16 months old. Neither one is inherently aggressive, but my boy does flare up when he's provoked and she's very skittish and flighty right now, so I think he spooked her with his unannounced entrance. This small interaction won't ruin their chances at being friends, will it? He was super friendly with the other two male cats my roommate had, but HATES the female who was aggressive towards him first. New cat is apparently good with other cats, so I imagine this is her being nervous and stressed out from her move.

I put out food and water for her and she has a box out for her to use once she decides to come out. Should I be worried if they don't get along within the week? All my cats have never had issues socializing before. I don't remember how he got along with the male cats, I think he just sorta accepted them as they were. I hope he doesn't just hate females for some reason. The people at Petco said the little female had been returned several times because she's too playful and that most owners didn't want a playful cat. She had been in a local shelter before, but she's been in Petco for over 5 months now, according to the employee, which is rare for them as they said most cats are adopted out within the first week or two. They mentioned she would be going elsewhere soon if no one wanted her...
