So, my wife and I have been wanting to get a friend for our 8 year old Aussie mix (female) to make sure she enjoys the rest of her life with a fun playmate. We found a rescue, also an Aussie mix, and are now fostering him for the weekend to get a sense if he is the right one for us. He's 8 months old and about the same size as our 8 year old.
He is very sweet to us and very well-behaved, already cuddling with us on the couch and just generally being well-mannered and loving. BUT he is aggressive with our dog. He snarls and growls at her when she gets close to him and barks when she tries to move past him. Our dog is very passive and I assume he is asserting his dominance.
While it may seem obvious that he isn't the right fit given the goal of finding a friend for our 8 year old, perhaps this is just him socializing and he will learn to be friends with her? Or, are we being pushovers and, as much as he's a sweet boy to us, he's not the right friend for our long-time best friend?
Any advice, similar experiences, etc. would be amazing!
