Our cat had been slowly declining over the years, losing weight, no appetite, no energy and over-grooming to the point of bald patches. On the most recent trip to the vet her blood work showed her kidneys were starting to fail but not in terrible shape yet, not enough to explain her poor condition. We tried every food, even home made meals but she stopped eating completely so we called and asked our vet for something we could give her to stimulate her appetite. The vet prescribed Mirtazapine, 1/4 pill every three days. It's an anti-depressant that has a side effect of increased appetite.
We gave her the first dose and within an hour she perked up but then became totally manic and spent the whole night pacing around the house howling. Then she crashed again for two days and wouldn't eat. On the third day we tried 1/8th of a pill and the cycle repeated but we stuck with it for a couple of weeks. She ate more on pill days but still crashed on off days. We tried 1/16th pills every two days for a while and that was better. Now my husband we patiently crushes each pill and divides it into 32 empty capsules and we give her one each morning. She has started eating a lot more, put on weight, her hair has grown back, and she's a lot more playful. Her kidney numbers haven't gotten any worse and she acts like a healthy cat again. I wish we had started these pills 2 years ago.
Three months ago we though we would have to put her down because she was acting so sick but she was apparently just depressed and now she's a fairly happy cat again.
