What if I never find my cat?

My barely one year old cat sneaked out the door a month ago and we haven’t seen him since. We’ve tried everything. I don’t even want to type it all out, but if it exists as a way to find a lost cat, we’ve done it. He wasn’t an outdoor cat except a handful of times and mostly with us supervising him.

Tonight we were driving around the neighborhood in an area where a man called and told us to look. It’s bitterly cold here so it’s the only option and we have seen several cats, just not our cat. I saw the man flagging us down. He then proceeded to act like he was going to berate us for having driven by (we live in a smaller town, God forbid someone drive through a cul-de-sac). He figured out we were the people he’d called and while I could tell he felt embarrassed that he was being a jerk, he obviously didn’t want to totally swallow his pride. He asked me if I hadn’t considered my cat was probably taken or more than likely dead.

Usually I have ways to respond to this, but I just didn’t tonight. I drove off and came home and cried for the last couple of hours.

People keep saying to not give up hope but I feel like they probably agree with the mean old neighbor man and think we’re stupid for trying so hard to find our cat. I don’t know why this guy’s words hurt me so badly. Maybe I’ve been unwilling to face the reality that I might never know what happened to him.

I don’t know how to not give up hope but also not become the crazy lady in the neighborhood. I don’t know how to move forward and also cope with this huge unknown.
