I was walking my German Shepherd around the neighborhood, teaching him to heel. I was doing pretty well, until there was this couple with their three dogs walking on the opposite direction on the other side of the street. Usually I would have taken a different route to avoid them, but today it was getting pretty late and darker outside, so being a little girl I am with no self-defense weapon on hands, I continued walking straight home.
My dog gets excited around other dogs. Usually if they start barking at him, he'd bark back and run at them because he thinks they want to play. So naturally, he ran over there, despite my effort to get a tight grip on the leash. I ended up falling on the concrete road and being dragged a few feet on attempt to stop my dog. I managed to get up, thank God I didn't hit my head against the ground and pass out. This has never happened before, since I usually have my leash hooked onto the dog's harness. But recently I noticed some red marks on his body where the harness is, I changed to hooking the leash onto the collar, which gave me less control.
The man was kicking my dog while holding out a taser, with the woman shouting "Tase him!" I got a hold of my dog's collar and removed him from the situation, walking away. The woman screamed at me, "Your dog just bit my pomeranian." I continued walking away, I wasn't looking to get into any kind of argument because it was me against the two of them. I knew my dog could never bite any dog, no matter how small. I have taken him to the dog park several times, he would run at other dogs to approach them and never ever bite them. If anything, it's the other dog jumping on him and play-biting him. Then the woman shouted again, "If my dog died, I'd come to your house."
I didn't apologize, because I know my dog didn't cause any harm and their dogs were okay (they have three small dogs, by the way). Some boys in the neighborhood saw the whole thing and tried to comfort me, telling them it wasn't my fault and if anything they were at fault for animal abuse trying to tase my dog. If I saw someone with their dog running at mine and they fell and got dragged across the concrete road, I'd at least ask if they were okay.
Are these people just heartless? Or am I just a helpless dog owner who can't even keep her dog on a leash?
I'm literally crying as I'm typing this, so please no mean comments. I don't know where else to vent, I'm new to this town, to this neighborhood, and have no friends. If you think it's my fault, please give me advice on how to better control my dog. Thank you!
