Cat 1: Adult male, domestic shorthair. Fixed. About 6 years old. Never had any health issues before. Has been on the same food since I adopted him 4 years ago (Purina One Indoor Advantage). Strictly indoor.
Cat 2: 10 month old female Russian blue mix. Fixed. Only health issue she has had was ringworm when we adopted her. She was quarantined for 4 weeks and cleared after rigorous treatment.
It started in early February with cat 2, the young one, with some thin hair spots. I assumed maybe the texture of her fur was changing to a more mature texture (she’s growing up) and didn’t worry too much. Then the spots got bigger. It soon turned into both of her sides and underbelly were completely bald. I didn’t know what could be causing it so I went to vet #1.
Vet #1 said it was most likely seasonal allergies, like pollen, and prescribed us a daily steroid pill and Zyrtec. I was skeptical but followed the 3 week regimen. No improvement. If anything, it got worse. Now, she is completely bad minus her head and spine, where she can’t reach with her mouth.
I consult vet #2, wanting a second opinion. I also ask about the possibility of a food allergy, even though she has been eating the same food for 7 months prior without the licking issues.
Vet #2 says it’s most likely behavioral, as Russian Blues can be a little neurotic (her words), and she also seems to have been weaned too early from mama because she has suckling tendencies still. Vet #2 says this can make for an anxious, stressed out cat. Vet #2 rules out food allergy, since she isn’t vomiting or having irregular poops. Vet #2 prescribes is Feliway and a supplement called Zylkene, which is supposed to be a calming aid.
It’s been about 5 days since I saw vet #2, and so far no noticeable changes. I know it’s still early but I’m anxious to get this solved. For cat #2 the licking is seriously ALL the time.
The most concerning part is, I just got home tonight and noticed three spots on cat #1’s side that look like they’ve been licked at, and the fur is thin and short.
So........riddle me this one. Pardon my language- but if this issue I’m having in cat #2 is stress or anxiety, why the fuck is my other cat #1 doing it too now? My other cat who is very laid back and has never had any health issues before?
We have not had any big changes happen. Nothing stress inducing. No moving, no babies, no other pets, nothing. The house is clean. Both of them have a very leisurely life with plenty of toys and a large cat tower. I don’t know what the fuck is happening and I’m DESPERATE to find out what the fuck is making my cats lick themselves bald. Please help me
