I have owned my two cats for almost 2 years now (they are around 2 years old). I have a variable schedule (med student, switching rotations and wake up times every 3 weeks or so). my cats have recently latched on to a schedule i was on previously and demand to be fed at 5am. This is something that has only been going on for the last few months but it’s impossible to sleep. They bite me, claw me, sit on me, jump on me, meow at me, everything. it’s so disruptive and I don’t have a door to shut them out. i REALLY try to not give in to their begging but I’m getting sleep deprived and I give in after around an hour of this. I am struggling to fall back asleep after I feed them also and I’m just getting so tired. Also they’ve started begging for my food and trying to eat anything when I have my back turned. I’ve never fed them my food in the past so I don’t know where this came from. They never did anything like this before and I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to make them stop begging. Sleep is already something that’s hard for me and I really don’t need my schedule AND my cats making it worse.
It seems like they’ve gone food crazy and I just don’t know how to solve this. I recently did decrease their food because they were getting overweight but it’s been 6 months and I thought they would be used to the changes by now (nothing crazy, i’m just more careful about measuring the correct amount than I was when they were kittens).
I’ve thought about automatic feeders but 1) one of my cats got a kidney stone they both are on a wet food diet and 2) they are so food crazed I am afraid they will break into it and eat it.
I’m just really tired and I’m trying to feed them later at night but that doesn’t change their desire for food at 4-5am every morning. I don’t think they are begging out of hunger, I think they are begging because it has gotten them food in the past. This is making me hate them and I just don’t want that.
