I'm moving from NJ to CA this summer with the help of my parents. The original plan was to drive the 2,800 or so miles, averaging eight to ten hours of driving per day and stopping in pet-friendly hotels each night. We did something similar, but on a smaller scale, when I moved from FL to NJ four years ago. I have a large soft-sided crate, so my cats sat comfortably in the back seat for the duration of the trip.
My parents are older now and have some health problems, so they would prefer to fly to CA and have my car shipped this time. My mother suggested putting the cats in cargo on the plane, but I am terrified to do this given the horror stories I've read of animals dying. I know that lots of animals go in cargo daily, but I just feel really uncomfortable with the whole idea of it. I know I wouldn't want to be left in a cargo hold for 6 hours, so why would I subject anyone I love to that?
Anyway, I asked if my younger brother (age 20) could fly with me so we could each take one cat in the cabin (as there is a maximum of one pet per person), but she got angry and shot down this idea, telling me to ask one of my friends to fly with me instead. I'm a poor doc student, but I do not mind paying for the extra ticket for someone else to fly with me for the sake of my cats. It's looking like my brother is the only option though because we're moving in the middle of the week and he'll be off from college at that time.
It's looking like my options here are limited. Does anyone have suggestions for moving cross country with animals (or convincing my pet-unfriendly mom that my cats are important enough to me to fly in the cabin)?
