The jist of our situation is that he KNOWS he should go outside, but he doesn't seem to want to hold it when we're at work/away.
A few key details:
- French Bulldog/Boston Terrier Mix (maybe?), 1 year 1 month old, 20 lbs.
- He knows he's meant to go outside: when we're home with him, he'll wait by the door patiently until we notice him and take him out. We were meticulous his first two months with us and kept a spreadsheet to anticipate his pee/poop times and take him out before he would have an accident.
- When we're at work, he mostly sleeps but will sometimes get up and pee/poop then go back to sleep (we have a camera, and we often monitor it for this reason).
- For a while, he could handle 5-6 hours at most, but now he can't seem to go 3 hours from when we leave and when he has an accident.
- Since he's gotten older, we've tested how long he can go without breaks when we're home on weekends or working from home. He's gone 7-8 hours without even asking to go out.
Some variables and other factors:
- We moved recently when he was about 10 months old, but even before we moved, he wasn't 100% without accidents. It seems to have ramped up, so we theorize it's anxiety-related.
- When we first moved, we would watch the camera after leaving, and he would bark/cry/howl a lot. But now, he just calmly sleeps but still has accidents.
- We keep him baby-gated off in the kitchen, while our other dog is in the living room (this was a similar situation in our previous apartment). We leave toys and stuff with him, and are going to try a Lickimat.
- We use an enzymatic cleaner to break down the "scent", but he just picks different spots in the kitchen.
- We tried leaving him enclosed in his kennel, thinking he has a positive association with it and knows it's his, but he pooped AND peed in it. He also recently tore into the thin mesh window (it's a travel one, and not a metal kennel), even though he wasn't zipped up?
- Very, very randomly, he'll run to a different room while we're home, have a quick pee or poo, and run back before we notice it. This isn't super common, but it does happen.
Any tips would be appreciated, or if anyone's been through a similar situation before.
