There's this grey cat that lives in an alley behind a plaza I hang out at often. There's one of those plastic cat crates with a towel in the bottom of it, and the cage door is always open. Sometimes I see the cat inside, sometimes he isn't there. There's always either a bit of catfood on the ground or a to-go box of leftovers that people left for him.
He isn't friendly. If I approach the crate his eyes get huge and he bolts if he's able to. Because of this I think it's better to leave him where he is than it would be to put him in a shelter.
I have a spare plastic food bowl in my garage that I can clean out and I'm thinking of leaving it there for him and filling it with dry food every weekday that I go downtown. It would make me feel better if he ate some real grain-free cat food instead of somebody's lasagna they brought to work and dumped on the road.
Is this a good thing to do? I won't be able to feed him on weekends but I think he'll manage just like he has been. Is there a chance he'll become to dependent on my feedings?
Also, should I put a new towel in the bottom of his crate? His towel looked wet and dirty and ripped.
