How do I stop my cat from attacking my kittens?

I have a Spazzy cat who, for YEARS, I couldn’t touch without oven mitts. She has come around a bit, but shes still iffy. I found her as a little kitten in some bushes with her mother and she’s always been like this. She will not leave the basement, which is where I sleep (for the purpose of this post I’ll refer to her as “Basement Cat”

I recently (5ish months ago) had a cat follow me home and give birth to 3 kittens. The kittens are at that curious stage, and want to check out the basement, so they hang around the landing in the kitchen and will occasionally attempt to go down the stairs.

Several times, Basement Cat has literally jumped on these kittens in an incredibly violent and vicious manner and has drawn blood. I can’t get her to stop and my only option is coming to putting her down, which I really don’t want to do.

I understand that she views them as a potential threat and that this is her “territory”, but these kittens are half her size and this behavior is absolutely unacceptable.

I have introduced several cats before and I’ve never encountered anything like this.

How do I make it clear that hurting these kittens is not okay and that she has no choice but to share “her space”, without anymore bloodshed?
