I have a male 11 year domestic long haired cat that I’ve had since he was a baby. His mom was feral and he had a littermate but she passed around seven years ago.
Just in the past year and a half I’ve had some issues with him peeing in places he’s not supposed to. When I lived in an apartment alone he started peeing on my bed. This would usually just happen when I’d be gone for the night. One day he went to the litter box and I noticed only a few drops came out. He would run to the water cup, drink water for a long time, then go back to the box and try peeing again. Nothing would come out and he’d drink so much water that he’d throw up. I rushed him to the emergency vet and they determined he was not blocked. They gave him an antibiotic injection for a UTI but didn’t run any diagnostic tests (because they said the injection would help and I could get the diagnostics done at my normal vet which is less money than the emergency vet).
So I took him home and we went for an exam a few days later with my normal vet. They did a urinalysis and later determined he did have a UTI. Problem solved. Or so I thought.
Earlier this year I moved in with my boyfriend and his two cats. My male and my boyfriend’s male did not get along at all and long story short, we ended up rehoming the other male. When the two boys were living in the house together my cat peed all over everything. The bed, any clothing, the floor, my chair, etc. Since rehoming the other cat he has been a little better but then one night as my boyfriend and I were watching tv in bed he jumped on the bed and peed right in front of us. I took that as a cry for help and went to the vet again (a different one this time). They did another urinalysis and gave him another antibiotic injection but a few days later the results from the urinalysis showed that there was no infection.
Since this time he’s been better. He still pees on piles of clothes if you leave them on the floor but mostly he goes in the litter box until a week ago. He peed on our coffee table (not in front of us) then last night he stood by my boyfriend’s head and peed on the head board of our bed. This seems like another cry for help. He’s not blocked because he’s still producing a lot of urine. He does seem to lick his genitals a lot after peeing and he’s very picky about his box needing to be super clean.
Obviously the next step is to go back to the vet but then what? Does this sound like something that can be treated? I’m going to ask for the urinary food this time to see if that helps at all.
