I made a mistake fitting a collar onto my Manx cat, Trooper, and left too much extra space. It was an old collar that I wanted to reacclimate him to so he can have some outside time now that the sun is coming out... and I stupidly trusted myself to have bought a snap off and didn't double check. I came home from a friend's tonight to find the collar lodged in his mouth and his paws and face covered in blood, and can see he struggled throughout the house to free himself.
I feel absolutely terrible that I didn't pay close enough attention to my collar choices and I want to pass the reminder to you to ensure you're not leaving too much room when fitting your animals. 1 to 2 fingers is what you're looking for, any more and you're in the danger zone. Make sure you choose a snap off too in case your pet gets caught on something or it loosens unexpectedly.
Hopefully this reminder helps prevent this scary and painful situation for at least one of Reddit's furry children :(
And if anyone is interested in how my boy is doing, my sister rushed over (thankfully she's 5 mins away) and helped me get the collar off because I couldn't keep him still enough to cut it. He's got a decent face cut and swelling, but is doing okay. He's tired and cleaning himself. I'll be taking him to the vet as soon as they open to ensure his teeth are okay, he's properly cleaned, and any pain managed. So scary, I feel terrible for him and wish I could tell him how sorry I am.
