My friends have had a very strange proposition from a veterinarian in which they would sign over ownership of their sick dog to the vet. Is this common? (Details in post)

They have a bulldog. He's three, so still fairly young. He stopped eating a few days ago, and no one seems to know what is wrong with him. The options of either putting him down, or doing exploratory surgery were presented to them. The surgery would likely be around $,3000 - $6000 depending on what they found, and it had a presumably low chance of success.

They made the difficult decision to put him down if he didn't improve over the next couple days. Then the veterinarian sent them a curveball. She offered to take ownership of the dog, and do the surgeries, but if she was able to help him, she would keep the dog for herself.

This has put them into a weird headspace that has ultimately made them land on paying for the surgery and trying to help him.

The whole thing feels very manipulative to me, and I'm curious if there's anyone that's experienced anything like this before.

Thanks for anyone that can help unpack this.
