My landlord won't allow larger animals like dogs or cats, but my therapist recommends a pet for anxiety. What type of pet should I look for?

I would ideally prefer something cuddly and friendly. My landlord has birds, and seems to like them, but I don't know how I feel about that. I'm home during the day, and I don't work many hours, so I want to spend some quality time with a pet if I can, while I'm home alone working on my computer. I was debating sneaking in a cat, but my landlord would smell it when we move out. Any ideas?
