My moms cat is attacking my dog, unprovoked

Was told by my mother that her cat got along fine with dogs and convinced me to adopt him from her, it’s the third day and I can’t even let my dog (10 year old beagle who is very calm and friendly) out of my bedroom still because her cat stalks him and then hisses and starts clawing very badly at my dog.

My dog isn’t doing anything or even attempting to sniff the cat anymore because he’s afraid of it.

I told my mom to come take him back because the cat is clearly not okay with dogs, the cat is otherwise friendly with us but as soon as he starts in on my dog, even trying to get him away results in him attacking us.

She thinks I’m not giving him a chance to adjust but I really don’t think that’s the issue as he seems very content and well adjusted to his new surroundings already.

After I realized this cat does not like dogs, I asked who’s dog he had been around previously and she said he hadn’t, that she assumed he was good with cats because he’s seen dogs walking by outside and didn’t react? He was an outdoor/stray cat before she took him in.

I’m pretty upset by this because I feel like she lied about it just to get me to take him, now she’s refusing to take him back and I’m unsure of what to do.

Is there a way to get the cat to get used to my dog?
