Unique Problem with Ants and My Cat...

Long story short, I live in an "old" place. When I mean old, I mean it's OLD. It wasn't really built up to code because it's just an extension to my landlord's home. It has a lot of structural flaws that are starting to catch up to it.

It's not perfect, but it's where I have lived for the past few years because I can afford the rent, and my landlord lets me have a cat.

However, in the spring and summer, one of the structure's big problems = ANTS. God, I hate ants!

Anyway, onto the unique problem. Basically, because the ants can slip through so many holes and cracks throughout the structure (even from the window sill), it's not unusual for ants to climb onto my cat and just ferry off of her to end up on the bed.

My cat sleeps next to me basically every night, and I like to leave the windows open during the night to keep it cool, but this also lets in more ants...

Basically, is there any real way to help cut down on the ants (safely) without hurting my cat? She loves to look outside on the window sills, but I also don't want to go through another spring or summer with a bed filled with ants crawling in the blankets and in my clothes! Yuck.

I am afraid of using too much poison, and I also don't want to waste my time trying to squish hundreds of ants on the window sill or whatever throughout the seasons.
