What would be the cause? She is healthy by all accounts. Eats, poops and pees as expected; grooms herself well, comes to cuddle with me periodically, runs around like a banshee at night. I have no reason to suspect health problems for these reasons.
Throughout her life she would occasionally cry at night or sometimes at the back door because she would want to go outside, typically on days we allowed her in the backyard. The crying would eventually stop after a few days. It was a normal cat cry.
The crying now is a terrible howling, yowling that is the stuff of nightmares. She’ll often go from silence to blood curdling meows. It will continue for a minute or two before stopping completely. She’ll be responsive to my petting but will still continue the howl when it happens.
This all started recently after a family trip away from home where kitty was left alone for 4 days (which happens about once a year without any howling after effects).
