Do you find that pet ownership is often times very expensive?

My fiance has always been a dog owner and both of us would like to rescue a dog together when we get married and have a different place. Everyone I talk to about it warns me of the expenses, such as a coworker who just spent $9k in the past week on her pug for vet care who unfortunately ended up passing away. To me, many of the expenses I've been warned about are worth it for rescuing a dog but I'm not going to lie, it's a tiny bit intimidating. We dont have any kids so our dog would be our "kid". I haven't had a dog since I was a kid so I don't recall such expenses. I guess what I wanted to ask is if pet ownership is "unaffordable" (I know) as some have told me or if pet insurance helps, etc.
