My cats seem really dependent on me and it makes me sad to leave my apartment. Am I crazy?

I have two cats, both about 2-years-old (siblings), and I’ve had them for about a year. I consider myself a really good cat parent, and I know both of my cats are perfectly healthy.

The problem is that my cats are unusually affectionate for cats. They run to the door when I come home, meow loudly when I leave, follow me around, try to clean me, try to sleep on me, headbutt me constantly, and lay on their backs and reach out at me whenever I walk past.

I love my cats, and I love how affectionate they are, and if I could I’d spend all my time with them. But honestly it’s gotten to the point where I feel bad when I go to work everyday, like I’m deserting them. I’m about to start a graduate program on top of work so I’m worried that I won’t want to leave for 12-14 hour days even though I need to.

I guess my main question is: is this all in my head? I know cats are supposed to be independent, but my cats feel really, really dependent on me. Like, when I leave and my cats meow at the door and then run to the window to watch me leave, is there some other explanation for that?
