My fiancé and I got a lovebird (miniature parrot) about 10 days ago, and although she's hand-trained and used to humans, she seems very afraid of us. The first few days we tried taking her out of her cage, holding her, trying to interact with treats, etc. However, if we get too close to her, she chirps and hops/flies away. We've decided to just give her the space she wants, open her cage in the morning, talk to her, and let her come out on her own, but when I go to change her food/water, clean her cage, or generally get too close, she gets upset. Am I just being too impatient? I want her to trust me, and I figured since she was hand-trained that she would be comfortable around people, but maybe not ALL people, at least not yet? I want to interact with her and have her as a companion, not an ornament in a cage. Should I just wait longer for her to warm up to me or did I make a mistake in getting her? I don't want her to be unhappy or uncomfortable. After all, she's a living creature, not a toy. Thoughts?
