I don't know what to do, and it's seriously making me want to move out even though I've only been living there for a few months. Just a note, in case it's important, I grew up with many different animals (even a mean cat!) and never experienced anything like this.
A little background: I moved into a new house with two other people and one cat about three months ago. The cat immediately showed aggression.
- She won't let me enter a room, move past doorways, or go into the kitchen without attacking.
- If she's right next to me and I start walking? Claws are dug into my calf and she bites. Hard.
- Sometimes she hunts me in the dark and seeks me out to attack (NOT playing. I can tell. There's a lot of growling and hissing). I just want to go to the bathroom!!!!!
- Doesn't let me pet her unless it is 100% on her terms and she rubs up against me.
I understand this is status aggression, as she does it to everyone (including her owner), but it doesn't seem to be getting better. The owner claims "she likes me" because the cat used to not let her friends in, our, or around her old apartment. They couldn't sit on the couch or walk without getting a furry tornado attack. On numerous occasions, my roommate has had to rescue her friends from their cat-sitting duties because it's gotten so bad. I also recognize that I was technically entering her territory as a new person, but my roommate said she does it to everyone no matter who was there first, so I guess that isn't the only thing causing this.
Now, I'm cat-sitting in our apartment for 2 weeks and only 5 days have passed and I'm at my wit's end. When she bites or swipes, I flick water at her and walk away for a while. This hasn't made much of a difference in her behavior, but she does avoid me when I'm washing dishes.
Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated. She already keeps me up starting at 3am because she's zooming around the apartment and scratching the carpet outside my door. Help, please.
