I have a 14 year old Labrador mix who hasn’t been doing so well lately. He was well trained and has always been so well behaved. For the last two months, he’s been having accidents isn’t he house coupled with aggression. He also has a hernia and has trouble standing for two long. He started slipping on the floor and struggling to get up for about 15 minutes, slides down the stairs sometimes, and sleeps for most of the day. He doesn’t greet us at the door anymore, wanders aimlessly sometimes, and is flinches often (I’m very confused about this last one). We’re all very loving to him and try to accommodate him as much as possible (lifting him up the stairs, placing carpet wherever we can, buying him doggie diapers), but his aggression makes this very difficult. He’s actually bitten my a few times when I’m trying to help. We’ve come to the conclusion that this is probably CCD (dog dementia). We sat down as a family and discussed the possibility that we may have to put him down if he keeps getting progressively worse, but I feel as if I’m in denial about it and don’t want to let him go yet. What were your experiences with this? Does it seem like the right time?
