Context: I've got three cats, Mew (female, 5 years old) Merlin (male, 4 years old) and Yelvis (male, 2.5 years old). Merlin and Yelvis like to rough house from time to time, but it's usually pretty harmless. However, the past couple months Yelvis has taken to straddling Merlin and scruffing him by the neck, especially when we go to bed. And he bites down hard, usually causing Merlin to let out a nasty growl/snarl. He only lets up if either my wife or I intervene.
We don't know why he's started doing this or how to stop it. We've tried giving them extra playtime right before bed (they just stay wound up), we've tried giving them a snack before bedtime (which has helped with other nighttime problems, just not this one), we've tried keeping them in separate rooms at night (which causes Merlin to cry incessantly since he probably has separation anxiety of some sort), we've even put Yelvis in his kennel overnight, which I hate doing.
What could we be doing differently? My wife is about ready to get a large dog kennel and put him in there with food and litter at this point since she's a light sleeper and can't stand it anymore. I'm not a fan of the idea, but I don't know what else we can do.
