My partner has just got a cat with my reluctant blessing & its now part of the family home. I sort of ok'd it one night after a couple of drinks but made it clear frequently that i couldn't be bothered with the hassle of a cat. Now i grew up with many, many pets and i've always liked cats. But imo we have enough hassle as it is living in a house permanently in a state of renovation with young children. I really wasn't convinced at all either but there had been previous talk about getting a Dog and i thought this would maybe be a compromise. But there he was 2 days later & here we are. Welcome Sebastian. Don't get me wrong he's nice enough, friendly, confident, very playful and the kids love him. He's been fully neutered & chipped too. However.................
With any rescue cat you're not supposed to let it out of the house for at least a month, or so we were told?. The problem is he's not using the litter tray properly, his aim is awful to say the least. This is a disaster of epic proportions. Cat shit is about the worst substance on the planet and the area around its tray by the back door is probably the 2nd most toxic area on the planet after the Fukushima exclusion zone. I'm also pretty sure its pissed in the kitchen. Our house stinks. I stink..i think. Right now sat at work, i probably stink. Yet i'm greeted with "Aw but look how lovely he is" every morning no matter what the state of the house is in.
The worst morning by far was when the dirty bastard missed the tray and shit on & lapped over the hot radiator valve overnight. The heating was on all night as it was a freezing cold night. Anyways this turd had been cooked low & slow for around 7 hours before i woke up think i'd woke up in hell. The smell permeated throughout the entire house and beyond and we had to burn candles in every room for 48 hours. I can still smell it everytime i walk in the house although my partner thinks i'm being dramatic.
He also wakes me up. Scratches the door to get in, scratches the door to get out. Plays at night and runs in & out of the room when i leave the door open. Wakes the baby up, every night. Cries when his bowl isn't full, even if it's half full he comes upstairs and cries. None of my pets as a kid did this.
Now we are approaching the month where we will let him outside. I was just wondering if there's any advice about moving forward with this cat. He's here to stay, the kids would never forgive me otherwise haha. We're getting a cat flap soon so hopefully the worst of it is round the corner. Then again i'm also concerned it will run away as i probably haven't been the friendliest owner since all this madness began as you can imagine. Poor thing is terrified of my toddler that chases him excitedly around the living room and i remember shouting & scaring him down the stairs one 1 occasion at 4am when it woke us all up...again. We don't live too far away from a main road either which is also a worry. Is this just a really bad, smelly cat or are we doing something fundamentally wrong? What if it won't use the catflap?
Thanks
