I have a dog who is about 13-14 years old and he's lived with me for 12 years after being rescued from the streets. Although old, he's still very active and jumps and runs around at certain times of the day. He's never been properly socialized and thus, hates other dogs. He's also a little territorial but not aggressive. And he's recently become deaf, which makes re-training him difficult. I've noticed that he doesn't really pay much attention to cats when he goes out on walks. He'll be curious and sniff them a little but the cat tends to chase him away.
The issue now is that I found a stray adult cat who is extremely skittish but all around lovable once he gets comfortable with you. He lives in a carpark and tends to hide under cars although he's recently been lounging around in open space. But he is still very wary of his surroundings and some humans. I've noticed that whenever dogs walk past, he would stop whatever he's doing and eye the dog until it leaves his sight.
I would like to adopt this cat but is doing so unfair to both the cat and my dog? And is it "abusive" to stress my old dog out with a new addition to the family? Is it better for the cat if I just left him to do whatever he's been doing thus far? The only time there was another animal in the house was when I had a hamster 9 years ago. My dog would obsess over the hamster and kept jumping up to look into the cage. I'm not sure if it's because he wanted to "hunt" the hamster or if he just thought it was a toy. I ended up giving the hamster away. Also, I live in an apartment if that matters.
It would really help if I can get some advice ):
