My bf has ad this cat for about 3 years and I’ll be honest and say I was not very fond of this cat for a while and was scared he would smother our newborn or scratch him, but he never has. He’s such a sweet cat, and let’s our now toddler literally tackle him! When we first brought our son home, the cat seemed a bit nervous, and about a month into this drastic change, our cat started urinating blood outside of the litter box to catch our attention, which resulted in a vet visit with antibiotics and Prozac. The cat took the full dose of antibiotics and was still showing us blood puddles around the house, turns out he had crystals in his bladder and is now on an RX diet. The problem is my bf. He’s so cheap, and literally gives his cat around A TABLESPOON of food twice a day. And now matter how much I ask him to just simply scoop HIS cats litter box ATLEAST every other day, he’ll neglect it for up to a week before I can’t be in the house because it smells so bad. So this poor sweet cat is absolutely starving all the time and eats the baby’s food under the high chair like a dog, and doesn’t have a clean place to do his business. I honestly don’t want to take care of this cat on top of the baby and everything else going on, and I told my bf I was to find a family who can take care of him properly to adopt him. You know like giving him a clean place to poop and feeding him suitable portions of his RX food etc. bf says, “no I’ll take care of him! I’ll clean his litter box! We just don’t have the money right now to buy him a lot of food! It’ll break my heart if you give him to someone else!” This has been going on for months (as well as many other responsibilities neglected hence why we are unmarried parents) but am I wrong to think he’s being selfish because he “loves” this cat but barely keeps him alive and well? I’m serious, I felt so bad when I found out he was feeding him a tablespoon tonight that I just opened a can and filled up his little cat bowl up and he scarfed down the whole thing. And I’m not “supposed to” do things like that because our family therapist says I’m being over responsible and this is one of the many examples. He’s not my cat but I don’t want to see him so hungry that he’s eating scraps like a dog.
