I recently rescued three rabbits who had been dumped outside of my house. While I was away on vacation I got a very panicked call from my little sister who was babysitting them about, Charlie, who I had thought was a boy giving birth. She's had 6 healthy kits but I'm not sure exactly what I need to be doing in order to make her comfortable and make sure that the babies survive. All of the bunnies are currently on a waiting list to be taken in by bunny rescues, but until then I've taken upon myself to make sure they all get the care they need.
Charlie made a nice nest out of her fur, but she keeps moving her food bowl on top of the nest. Should I remove her bowl when she's not eating or is that normal? I tried to look it up myself, but I really didn't see anything about that particular behavior. I have moved her to a quiet area and put a towel over part of her cage to help make her feel secure and I have moved my tenants cat into a room so he can't have access to her.
I did check the babies when I got back from vacation today and all seem to have full bellies and are wriggly and active. They're only a day old and I've read that I should check on them at least once a day to make sure they aren't getting wrinkly and that all tummies feel round to make sure she's feeding them.
Is there anything else I should be doing for them? I've asked a few of my friends who've owned rabbits, but none of them really have experience with mom and babies. I have reached out to the different rescues that have them on their waiting list, but it was mostly just make sure to have syringes on hand and replacement milk just in case she rejects them.
