For context, I have a stubborn border collie. He is a good and smart dog, but defiant as can be. When I say defiant, I mean, if he doesn’t want to do something he practically tells you to go fuck yourself.
We live in England and it rains here, like a lot. I am in a rental property with a very large yard (for UK standards) but no grass. The dog loves getting muddy and I mean LOVES it. He also refuses to allow me to wash his paws/butt undercarriage/face (bucket with warm water and soap). I have chased him through the yard, and carried him to the bucket only to end up needing a shower myself. I have used raw meat and every treat you can think of to get him to come in and he barks at me, runs away and goes back to getting muddy. The other day it was hailing and I did everything in my power to try and get him to come in, but he refused. There are times where it’s like midnight and he won’t come in. Sometimes, I’m physically tired and won’t go chasing him through the yard, so I put a box out with a blanket under a table in case he gets cold. He will bark at the door if it rains and that’s when he allows me to wash his paws (even when he barks it’s 50/50). I don’t want to put a dog house out there because the dog won’t bother to come in anymore and I will not bother to fight him on coming into the house
Here comes the neighbor part. She’s made passive aggressive comments to me about leaving the dog out for a long time. I’ve tried to politely explain to her the situation, but she’s one noisy ass person who won’t stop. Sometimes, when I leave the house, the dog stays outside because he doesn’t want to come in. When I return home, I find notes on my floor (pushes through the letter box) saying “RSPCA CALLED”. I got fed up and put what I’ve been telling her for almost a year in writing. Also told her that the RSPCA or any concerned neighbor are more than welcome to buy the dog an outdoor dog house, but I won’t do it.
The dog is cared for. I feed him well because he likes being outside when it’s cold. I feed him a mix of raw meat and dry food. Water on tap. There’s a little shelter under the table in case it rains and I’m not home (water doesn’t get in there). He’s got flea/thick medication, he’s dewormed, nails trimmed, hair brushed...... he just fucking likes it out there.
People really need to mind their business when it comes to other people’s pets. When somebody tells you the situation to your face, leave them alone. Also, this lady has really old dogs who she’s never bother to potty train. The dogs have been shitting and pissing inside her house for as long as she’s had them and they’ve never seen the light of day, not even in the back yard.
Anyway.... gotta go attempt to get the dog in. He’s actually barking at the door.
Edit to add: not sure if this matters, but we got him off a farm in Wales. Mom and puppies all lived in a barn. That was over a year ago.
