I adopted a 3 year old dog about a month or two ago (GSD rescued of the street, no other history). He is a great dog, but a small passing comment about separation anxiety was made while I was walking out the door.
Since I work at home it wasn’t a big deal, however the first time I tried to go to the market (gone less than 20 minutes) he jumped out the window (knocked out a fan and through the screen) and off a roof. He was brought back by a neighbor, and jumped out again before they realized how he got out. Luckily he wasn’t injured.
So now he goes with me everywhere. He’s perfectly fine hanging out in the car while I run quickly into a store or something but he seems to haven gotten worse!!
Now he’s even started to whine even when I go to the bathroom. I’ve been trying to deal with it the best I can, I know being adopted is a big transition. I’ve been doing practice exercises where I “leave” him for a few minutes and those kind of things. He does ok but I haven’t seen improvement yet. Im Being patient but I’ve been surprised that it’s seems to have gotten worse. He is very picky about treats so training him has been a little tough.
We have a check up at the vets next week so I am going to try and get a recommendation for a trainer but any experience or advice on this would help!
