Cats and dogs getting along

I have 2 dogs and a cat we got a couple years ago that don’t get along very well. The cat has been living in our basement to avoid the dogs and we often let him out of the house. The youngest dog is 3 and he seems pretty clueless to the cat, like he acknowledges that it exists but he doesn’t seem to care for it much. The other dog is 5 and the complete opposite. He is addicted to the cat and is usually waiting at the bottom of the steps to the basement because he knows where the cat is. He and the cat have gotten to each other, usually the cat just runs but if it comes down to it he would try to attack the dog. The dog has killed a couple groundhogs and a bird instead of retrieving them when we took him for hunting training so I’m worried what he would do if he found the cat. My main question is what can we do to get them used to each other? I’ve seen a few guides saying put them in the same room in separate crates and let them sit for a while which we’ve done but not often or consistently. I also wonder if the age of the pets would make it harder since they weren’t raised with another animal of a different species in the house.
