My puppy (4mos) is a sweet girl who is gentle as can be with children, cats and nearly every dog she meets EXCEPT that 1 out of every 10 times she meets a dog while out on her leash and goes bananas. For no obvious reason (being startled, the other dog showing aggressive signs, etc.) she will sometimes decide that she is terrified of an approaching dog and will cower behind me and bark and growl. The growl in particular really concerns me because she sounds quite fierce - she is a shepherd cross and though young is going to be big and has a "big dog" bark and growl. She never shows her teeth or snaps at the other dog, but she does put her hackles up.
The problem is, there is NO pattern to which dog is going to freak her out - today for example, she had great interactions with a German Shepherd three times her size, a young doberman, and a smallish mutt, but lost her mind at a Corgi puppy - and she only ever seems to do it when I am walking her. She goes to a very good, structured doggy daycare every day where she has puppy class and interacts with 15+ other dogs of all age/shape/size/breed and they love her there. When I mentioned to her teachers she was having this trouble, they looked at me like I had three heads and said she was the best behaved puppy on their pack walk. She has met my mom's schnauzer cross with zero incident and my aunt's very aggressive Morkie also with no problem at all.
When my husband walks her, apparently she will bark once in a while, but never goes into the frightened aggressive state she does with me. What am I doing wrong? How can I curb this before she gets herself in trouble? I'm so afraid she's going to growl at the wrong dog and get attacked!
