There is this feral cat that lives around our apartment complex. Honestly, I'm not even sure she could classify as feral. Everyone has been collectively feeding and loving on her so she is very tame and affectionate. Since it has started to get cold, my husband really wants to take her in and adopt her as ours. We brought her into the apartment and she warmed up VERY quickly, but as I have never brought in a cat from outside before, I was hoping for some advice on how to help domesticate her. We're going to bring her in to the vet in the morning for a wellness check and plan on getting her fixed as soon as possible, she recently had kittens which didn't survive.
She already seems to trust us. She is very affectionate and has been playing with toys, eating some (we're trying not to give her too much at once as she's very small), and using the scratchers already. She's sleeping in my lap now.
Since we brought her in, we closed my other cat off. She has been spraying around the house in seemingly random areas. What is the best way to introduce her to my cat who is already here? He is around 3 years old and she is seemingly pretty young. Also, does anyone have any advice on the spraying? I know that being wild, she is prone to doing it anyway.
Also, what is the best way to teach her to use a litterbox? My current cat is on pelleted wood litter. Is there a way to start her on it or should we try the usual cat litter than transition from that?
While I understand the warnings against attempting to domesticate a wild cat, my husband and I decided she would be happier to have someplace warm since she is already so loving towards people. We won't force her to stay. If all doesn't go well and she seems unhappy she can easily go back to her life before.
