Four days ago my cat Kiwi (F, only pet, 5 years old, siberian, fixed, indoor only, 5,5 kg (12 lbs)) had some issues with urinating. She was frequently peeing, straining in litterbox, had blood in her urine, constantly licking her butt. We have never experienced this before but i knew that the reason could be cyctitis, urinary tract infection, crystals etc. I started researching further and learnt that urinary tract bloackage could also be the culprit and it was a serious condition that requires immediate invervention. I freaked out as i live in a town that doesn't have any vet clinics or experienced vets and i had to take her to city (2 hours away) for help. It was late and we couldn't find a ride so my father called a vet asking for an advice, they advised pain relieving+antispasmodic shots and a medicine for relieving urinary tract issues. We gave her shots and pill, i also made her drink lots of water using a syringe. I took her to Baku (I live in Azerbaijan) following morning. Vet took her temperature (it was normal), did a physical examination with his hands and told me that her bladder was soft and he didn't feel any hardness/blockage etc. He asked some questions and said that it is probably either cyctitis or inflamation/infection. He sent us for x-rays and blood analysis to another clinic. Her bladder was empty (she was constantly peeing at home and i didn't give her any water before traveling) so he said urine analysis wan't possible. We went there, they took x-ray and draw blood for analysis and told me they'll send results to our vet once it is ready. X-ray technician didn't see any stones/blockage etc. We returned to vet's office waited for results for a few hours but they were delayed. It was getting late (i waited too much in both clinics) so vet gave me some antibiotic shots, a liquid medicine for helping crystals/minerals and told me to continue pain relieving+antispasmodic shots+medicine that he advised before. He gave her first dose of shots/medicine while we were there and told me to put her on a special diet for 2 weeks. Normally she eats R/ C (british shorthair) as dry food and 1 pack felix wet food in every other day. I was also giving her greek yoghurt (we always have that at home, my mom makes it) sometimes a little bit cheese, smetana, cooked chicken breast/veal/fish, egg yolk (boiled), small amount of milk etc. Vet told me that i should absolutely refrain from giving her anything else other than her prescription food (R/ C urinary tract dry+wet food) for 2 weeks. Even greek yoghurt wasn't allowed. After returning home she ate some dry food and i gave her water with syringe again.
Following day my father called vet to learn about results, he said that x-ray seemed normal but he didn't receive blood results yet. I gave her wet food she liked it but she doesn't seem to like her dry food. She is a fussy one knowing this i should have bought 14 packs of wet food instead of 7 (R/ C wet food got very expensive in recent years here thats the reason we switched to felix). I also thought that urinary tract issues usually require lifelong management to minimize reoccurrings, it could be financially hard for us to buy prescription wet food all the time. Today was the same i gave her a wet food again and she had only a few kibbles.
What can i give her if she refuses to eat her prescription dry food? There aren't many brands here unfortunately and she is a picky eater.
Why yoghurt was also prohibited? I didn't see any reason for it cause problem, i was giving her to make sure she receives more wet stuff/fluids. I know how important water is for cats. Assuming she'll heal after her treatment i'm supposed to make sure it doesn't reoccur. We can't afford switching to R/ C prescription wet food as her main diet.
What advice can you give, how was your experience with urinary tract problems and how did you manage it if you did?
She had 2 waterbowls (i got her another one so 3 now) and i refresh them every day. We even stop moving when she is drinking water or else she gets distracted and doesn't drink. I want to buy water fountain but i haven't seen it any of petshops i've been while in Baku (our town doesn't have petshop either). What else i can do to make her drink more water?
I apologise for lengthy post and my english.
