I feel bad for punishing my puppy

Whenever my puppy does something bad, let’s say for example; biting the curtains, I always just yell at her first. But that doesn’t seem to work. I shake her sometimes but she just fights back. She tolerates yelling, and being shaken, and I don’t wanna hit her. So I decided to put her in her cage. Then she starts crying loudly, but I decide to keep her in until she calms down. The thing is, she didn’t. So I let her out, and she rushed straight to the door crying. I think that means she wants to leave. After that, I noticed that she did the bad thing less.

I don’t know what I should do to discipline her instead. I mean, this is the only thing that worked so far, but I hated seeing her cry. Any advice?

FYI: She’s 2 months old and has been with us for a week.
